Every day there are thousands of websites being launched on the internet. To make your site unique and have a good ranking in SEO, you need a robust CMS platform. This is where WordPress comes in the picture.

Select an appropriate Webhost which supports WordPress. Once the WebHost is selected; the installation of WordPress can be done by downloading WordPress from WordPress.org. There are lots of free plug-ins, themes, and templates which you can utilize to customize your WordPress site.

But there are a few things you need to take into consideration before launching your WordPress (WP) website on the internet.

Checklist:

Site Backup:

Once your WordPress site is ready, set up a WordPress backup solution on priority. In case of any damage, the backup will help to retrieve all your data.

WP CMS comes with free backup plug-ins which can be installed on your website very quickly. There are different plug-ins for different types of backups i.e., database backups, complete backups, and scheduled backups. UpdraftPlus and BackupBuddy are some of the best WP backup plug-ins.

Always put automatic schedules on your backup so in case you forget, the backup reminder sends an alert for the same. All WP backup plug-ins send backup files to DropBox, Amazon S3 or Google Drive. Backups are very precious, and their importance is visible in the case of cyber-attacks.

WordPress Admin Area Protection:

Admin Area Protection is equally essential for your site. A good website application firewall like StackPath Web Application Firewall or Sucuri Website Firewall or any other should be installed.

Strong Password for your admin directory and limited login attempts and accesses to IP addresses also help in protecting the admin area.

Install SSL:

An SSL certificate (Secure Socket Layer) encrypts all information passed between browsers and servers, so all online communications are secure. If you have multiple domains, then you can choose SAN SSL certificate. When you install multi domain (SAN SSL) on server, there is no need to purchase individual certificate for each domain.

There are many different types of SSL available in the market, and one of them is SAN SSL certificate (Multi domain SSL).

Installation of Multi-Domain SSL certificate secures all multiple domains and sub-domains of your website. This is cost-effective because all domains and sub-domains can be secured using a single certificate so, there is no need to purchase a single certificate for each domain.

404 Error check:

404 Errors checks are those checks which detect broken links, broken backlinks, and dead pages in your website. It can scan unlimited webpages and internal and external URLs. This error informs about the bad or broken URL as well reveals about the URL’s location in HTML.

You can use a free plug-in like Broken Link Checker that checks all links associated with website pages, posts and performs testing of the error. It fixes bad URL, dead links, and missing links quickly, thus making your website error-free.

E-mail Configuration:

WordPress sites use PHP mail function by default for sending e-mails. But many times, it happens that e-mails sent from WordPress site are not delivered or are treated as spam by the service provider.

So, it is recommended to use SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) which authenticates the e-mail and increases the frequency of e-mail delivered and received.

You can install WP Mail SMTP plug-in and configure WordPress to work with SMTP.

An extra step after e-mail setup is to check and ensure whether all the forms and e-mail subscriptions are working correctly or not. Ensure proper delivery of e-mails by test mails, so important messages are not left undelivered in the future.

E-commerce, Image and Video Functionality Check:

If you have an ecommerce website, check for all user functions like browsing between products and pages, adding them to cart, testing transactions and payment methods, and ensure their smooth sailing in the website.

Also, re-check whether the receipts, invoices, shipping costs, and taxes are correctly and adequately displayed.

Another most important aspect of the website is their images and videos. Ensure that they are correctly loaded; videos are correctly displayed on different devices. Displaying YouTube videos and images make a site more attractive; but if page load time increases, it may damage user rankings.

Install Fast Video and Image Display plug-in, which allows users to upload YouTube videos instantly.

Check Social Media Sync-Ups:

Social media is an integral part of everything online. Be it business or promotions. Hence it becomes essential to integrate your WordPress site with social media platforms. Social media helps increase online visibility and traffic to your website, thus improving SEO.

Ensure that the users can connect with you through your website on media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, etc.

Check SEO settings:

It is essential to make your WordPress site SEO friendly so that it rates high in SEO rankings.

To improve SEO, organise your permalinks, and make your site faster. You can for example, use Yoast SEO WordPress Plugin which creates XML sitemaps automatically and notifies Google and Bing about its presence. In this way, there will be traffic on your site consistently, making people aware of your website.

Also check whether you have covered all your pages and blogs, given appropriate headings, got page titles and focused keywords for better results.

Test Site Performance:

Before launching any website, it is always safe to test its performance so that the launch is error-free and smooth.

Mostly performance-related issues occur when the website is being developed. Though you have taken care of the same in the development phase, a final performance test is essential.

Check for Cross-Browser and Mobile Compatibility:

Your site display must remain the same in all browsers i.e., Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, or Mozilla Firefox. If the display is different in diverse browsers, you need to check for cross-browser compatibility issues.

Though you have already installed all the browsers on your website, your site may not function correctly in one browser, and hence you need to perform a check on the same.

There are many cross-browser testing tools in WordPress, like BrowserShots, BrowserStack, CrossBrowser Testing, etc. You can use these tools to test your website on different operating systems.

You can also install Google Analytics which analyses the details of the users, their time duration spent on your website; browsers used by them, etc. which prove to be necessary for the success of your site.

Also, check for mobile compatibility since a lot of users would be accessing your website from mobile.

Conclusion:

It is essential to consider all the above things before you launch your WordPress site. If these measures are taken care of, then your WordPress site is bound to be a success. Best of Luck!!
