Here’s an example of SEO friendly URL:

What makes above link SEO friendly?
– It contains the keywords used for the post. It also avoids the stop words in the link.

Then, what type of links are SEO-unfriendly? Here’s an example:

WordPress by default makes the URLs SEO friendly by using the post title in the permalink. So, you need not worry much to make WordPress URLs SEO friendly. The only thing that you need to take care of is avoiding the stop words in the link. Stop words are the words link ‘who’, ‘is’, ‘it’, etc which are avoiding by search engines while searching. So, try avoiding stop words as far as possible.

By default WordPress uses the permalink format:

Above permalink structure is best suitable for news sites. But, if it’s business website with a small number of posts, the best possible SEO friendly permalink structure is ‘post name’:

If your website is going to have a large number of posts, you should go for custom structure:

This rewrites the .htaccess file of your website and your permalinks are changed.

Be careful!

If your website has been live for a long time and has already been well indexed in search engine, don’t change the permalink structure. Changing the permalinks make all earlier links dead which affect the SEO ranking negatively. Besides, you’ll also loose the social media likes and shares count.

But, if you are using SEO unfriendly permalink structure (e.g. ), you better change it to SEO friendly structure. What you gain is much better than what you loose in this case.
